CursorOnce your child has been diagnosed with cancer and the treatments have begun, it is not often that they get to do “normal” things. Going on the internet can be informative for you and fun for them.

Here are a few Web resources for you and/or your child to go to. Some of these provide information, while some can provide hours of fun and learning for your child. It is hard for a child to feel a sense of normalcy when they are going through chemotherapy or radiation treatment, so we hope that these Websites help to ease the boredom of the hospital room.

www.cancercare.org – This website is focused on the particular needs of children and parents for things like practical support, education and advice to parents, and counseling to children and teens to help them understand cancer.

www.cancersourcekids.com – This is a secure website where children can learn about cancer in a fun and interactive manner.

www.supersibs.org – This website supports and recognizes brothers and sisters of children with cancer.

www.sunshinekids.com – This website provides positive group activities and emotional support for young cancer patients through a variety of programs and events, free of charge, for kids who are receiving cancer treatments in hospitals across North America.

www.2BME.org – This website offers practical and emotional advise for teens living with cancer such as information on how to care for your skin, hair loss, diet and coping socially.

www.chemoangels.com – This website matches patients who are going through the difficult time of chemotherapy with “Angels”, volunteers who bring encouragement with notes, cards and occasionally small gifts.

www.kidsaid.com – The website, part of GriefNet, helps kids contact other kids online to talk, get advice and share stories about what is going on.

www.kidscope.org. – This websites mission is to help children and families understand the effects of cancer or chemotherapy on a loved one, to provide suggestions for coping, and to develop innovative programs and materials that communicate a message of hope to diverse families coping with this crisis.

www.allkidsnetwork.com – This website is full of crafts, puzzles, coloring pages and fun ideas for kids of all ages.

www.highlights.com – This is an interactive website full of games, puzzles and jokes for kids of any age.

www.clubpenguin.com – This is an interactive website where kids can create their own avatar penguin and chat (if parents decide they are allowed otherwise that feature is turned off), play and interact with other “penguins.

www.webkinz.com – This website allows you to register your Webkinz and then you can dress them up, design rooms for them, play games and interact with friends.

We hope that these Websites are valuable tools for information purposes as well as entertainment tools for children. What online resources have you found useful? Please share with them with us.
